Energy Loss
Infrared technology can show sources of energy loss much more clearly and easily than a regular building inspection. A professional home inspector, equipped with a thermal imaging camera and properly trained and certified in its use, can find problems with energy loss that normal building inspectors cannot.
The image on the right shows a night view of a typical two-story building. The image below it shows the same building as seen by an infrared camera. Heat loss can be seen in the yellow, orange and red areas, with yellow indicating the greatest amount of heat loss.
The camera can reveal water and air infiltation through a building's exterior covering, whether the building has brick, stucco or siding. Water and air infiltration is particularly evident around windows and doors, but may also be revealed as weak points in the insulation.
Thermal imaging can give you very detailed knowledge of your home's condition and value through this method, which is non-contact and non-invasive. It's particularly useful in building envelope inspections. The average home or building owner will also be able to clearly identify energy loss that will increase the cost of heating a building.
